Located to the west of the Hillsborough River and to the south of Columbus Drive. West Tampa was founded in 1892 and it was incorporated as a city three years later in 1895 with a population of 2,335. Founded by Scottish immigrant and attorney Hugh MacFarlane for whom MacFarlane Park is named. He founded the town with the intention of luring the cigar industry and its workers; remanants of the former cigar industry can be found along Howard and Armenia Avenues . West Tampa was primarily populated by Cuban and Italian immigrants working in the cigar industry. The city was one of the fastest-growing cities in Florida in the early 1900s. In 1900, it had more inhabitants than the city of Tallahassee and was the second largest city in Hillsborough. It was one of the top cigar-making cities in the country during the early 20th Century along with Ybor City. West Tampa, however, was absorbed by the city of Tampa in 1925 and the rest is history for this long established Tampa neighborhood.
Today West Tampa is the location on one of the 5 National Register Historic Districts in the City of Tampa. From West Tampa you have easy access to downtown, Hyde Park, Westshore, Tampa International Airport, and so much more. The historic district is a great place to invest. New businesses have opened along Howard and Armenia Avenues. West Tampa has two of the best sources for period style doors for historic homes in the city (in this writer's opinion).
