Ybor City, just a couple miles east of downtown Tampa was founded in the 1880s by cigar manufacturers looking to set up operations. It is birthplace of Tampa's reputation as the "Cigar City" it was founded by Jose Martinez and settled by Cuban, Sicilian, German, and Jewish immigrants in the late 1800's. The neighborhood developed as a diverse multi-ethnic and multi-racial that was unique for a southern city.
Today Ybor City still reflects more than almost any other part of Tampa her immigrant roots. During the day you have the streets filled with retail shoppers and professionals from nearby offices. Often referred to as Tampa "latin quarter" Ybor City at night is Tampa's playground. Along 7th Avenue are a variety of resturants and bars. Centro Ybor offers movies and shopping. Ybor is often host to events like Guavaween, The knights of S'Yago Illuminated night parade, and cultural festivals.
Designated a National Historic Landmark District, today Ybor City has a growing residential population as the casitas of another generation are restored within the Barrio Latino Historic District. To the north and south of 7th and 8th Avenues, new condominiums and townhomes rise on lots vacant since urban renewal in the 1960's. The historic district is home to one of the campuses of Hillsborough Community College. Ybor City reflects a unique mixture of single family, condo, and townhouse real estate opportunities.
Ybor City residents can stroll to a variety of resturants and shops or take a short trolley ride to the Channelside District and the St. Pete Times Forum, home of the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Signs of further renewal are spreading to the north of I-4 and and there are "diamonds in the rough" just waiting for the next wave of urban pioneers. To the south Ikea has opened it's first location on the west coast of Florida.
